I looked at the details in the registry where Windows 7 keeps information about the default browser. After setting Firefox to be the default browser, these registry entries just details about Firefox. After that, setting IE to be the default browser just changes top-level information to refer to IE, the lower level registry details incorrectly still refer to Firefox. I suspect this goes unnoticed by the Windows user because it uses only the top-level information to determine the browser to launch and gets it right. Notes, on the other hand, seems to take a different approach, using the now incorrect low-level details to launch Firefox.
So, this looks to me like two errors. 1) the full Notes client does not check the same default browser information that Windows check and 2) When IE set to as the default browser it does not update all of the related registry information.
